The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is Colbert’s new out-of-character talk show on CBS, which is otherwise surprisingly like his old show.
- After a short monologue, which usually takes the form of a single story rather than a series of topical jokes like the normal talk show format, he retreats to the desk and does political jokes with the images over his shoulder just like he used to open the Report.
- He has more serious guests than a typical talk show of this type. He’s had George Clooney and Scarlett Johansson, but he’s also had Jeb Bush, Joe Biden, Elon Musk, and the Uber CEO.
- He still has the shelves with a bunch of random stuff like Cap’s shield (dunno if he still has a picture of House, though).
- He’s still a huge nerd.
- His desk is still shaped like a C.
I haven’t watched Kimmel other than mean tweets videos, Fallon more than occasional clips, Seth Meyers other than a clip where he was interviewing Anna Chlumsky and she said her fantasy football team is named The Filthy Assistants because she loves Transmetropolitan (which is awesome), Conan since he was on the 12:30 NBC show, or that British guy at 12:30 on CBS, so maybe other people have done amazing fresh new things with late night talk shows. But compared to what I remember, Colbert is fairly different. And so far I’m enjoying watching it.
