Pointless Nonsense

whasfdocWet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp is the new Netflix series that is a prequel to the movie that was set on the last day of camp, and it’s weird how some of them have clearly aged the 14 years it’s been since the movie (especially Michael Showalter), while others look basically the same (especially Paul Rudd and Elizabeth Banks). But they’re all basically in their 40s now, still playing teenage summer camp counselors, so that’s weird.

To the cast already full of an unusual amount of famous people (I can’t tell if Samm Levine is still dubbing the radio kid’s voice, but otherwise all the famous people from the movie are back), they add Josh Charles, Jason Schwartzman, Weird Al Yankovic, Richard Schiff, Jon Hamm, Chris Pine, John Slattery, Rich Sommer, Richard Schiff, Paul Scheer, Kristen Wiig, Rob Huebel, Lake Bell, Michael Cera, Bruce Greenwood, and a couple actual non-white people with speaking parts which the movie did not have, like Jordan Peele and that guy from Fresh Off the Boat.

I didn’t like it much at first, but kept going out of boredom. As they started to give the movie characters elaborate and strange backstories, and the many concurrent storylines started to progress, I started to find it more interesting. It’s still not that funny, but there are a few jokes that worked pretty well. I ended up finishing the whole thing pretty quickly. Which really left the Jefferson Starship song they use as a theme stuck in my head.
