Birdman is unfortunately not the movie version of Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law. It stars Michael Keaton as a has-been actor who used to star in a superhero franchise, who is now trying to restore his reputation with an artistic new role. Which is fairly meta. Also, he has like telekinesis or something? It’s kinda weird. Edward Norton and Naomi Watts are in his play, Emma Stone is his daughter, Amy Ryan his ex-wife, and Zach Galifianakis is his manager. Ultimately, I was a little disappointed that I think the message is about artistic expression in a Hollywood blockbuster environment, which doesn’t really mean a lot to me or, I think, most of the people watching. But probably plays great for critics and award voters.
But the meta stuff with Michael Keaton was interesting, it’s Edward Norton’s best role in a good while, the almost exclusively drums soundtrack is pretty cool, and the appearance of no cuts for the vast majority of the movie was a cool gimmick.
