Transparent season 1 is free to watch today on the Amazon as some kinda promotional thingy for winning the Golden Globe for best comedy, so I thought I’d check it out. Jeffrey Tambor plays the father who’s coming out as trans, Judith Light as the ex-wife, and some familiar actors play their kids. Melora Hardin is almost unrecognizable as one of the kids’ former lesbian partner. Bradley Whitford and Katheryn Hahn also have recurring parts. There’s a surprising amount of nudity, mostly (all?) female (non-trans).
It’s kinda bullshit that it’s even nominated in the comedy category for awards, because this is a half hour drama. Like without question. Castle for example has way more jokes and way less drama than this does. The heavy stuff that goes with transitioning, obviously, but the kids are all fucked up too.
But it’s a pretty good show, actually. Though not particularly funny, it’s interesting to see how the family deals with this stuff.
