Pointless Nonsense

Some movies over the holidays:

  • The Wolf of Wall Street is excessively long and more of a drug comedy than I was expecting. Perfectly entertaining, but not great.
  • The Way Way Back has one foot in the 80s (wood paneled station wagon, a pac-man arcade game, no one seems to have a cell phone) but it’s apparently set in the present. But other than that it was pretty good. Sam Rockwell is awesome in a supporting role. The main story is a coming of age thing about a sort of loser-ish kid and his mom and his mom’s asshole boyfriend, which I would not have expected to enjoy but I did.
  • Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom is a good story and all, though in typical biopic fashion they are more interested in playing through the highlights of someone’s life than focusing on the things that I find interesting. I would have hoped to focus on Mandela’s decision to turn to violence in the first place, and his subsequent decision to choose to forgive white South Africans and promote peace when many wanted revenge. These seemed like the key points in his life and very difficult decisions, but the movie sort of glossed over them. Also, Idris Elba looks weird as hell without facial hair.
  • This Is The End is a pile of shit. Famous people playing themselves as assholes is fine as a comedic device, but a hole movie with nothing to offer more than that gimmick (and an obsession with dicks)? Awful. I’m really getting sick of Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Jonah Hill. Craig Robinson is still ok though. But I did learn that Jay Baruchel’s name is apparently pronounced BARE-a-shell. In my head it’d always sounded like ba-ROO-kull.
