Pointless Nonsense

hulk-smashHulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H. is the latest Marvel animated series, and they are trending in the wrong direction. Avengers:EMH was a nice combination of kid-friendly and sprawling crazy comics stories, Ultimate Spider-Man is silly but watchable, Avengers Assemble is not very good at all, and this Hulk show is just bad. It uses the same random letterboxing as AA, but even more of it. Which is irritating. It falls into the (common) trap of casting celebrity voices instead of voice actors, using Seth Green, Clancy Brown, and Eliza Dushku for Rick Jones, Red Hulk, and She-Hulk, respectively. They’re mostly fine, but voice actors without recognizable voices always make the characters seem more real. Their take on She-Hulk is really weird. She’s not a lawyer, and she seems not totally comfortable with being a green giantess with super strength. Both of which seem like big changes to who She-Hulk is.

The concept is that Rick Jones wants to improve Hulk’s public image, so he gets hovering robots to film Hulk’s exploits. So we’re given an Office-style faux reality show approach to Hulk, complete with the cutaways to characters staring at the camera and talking about what’s happening. And I have never watched a superhero cartoon and thought “needs more confessionals.” That, combined with it being mostly big dumb action for kids, and being about characters I don’t care much about, means I won’t be watching.

The weirdest thing about the confessional style thing they have going on is, given that the whole point was to make Hulk look better, I would think Rick like posts the footage on a website rather frequently, as opposed to the whole Office thing where like they’re gonna get a bunch of footage and release it like years later. I would think he wants to rehabilitate Hulk’s image now, not later. But that doesn’t gel with the knowing Skaar is a mole thing and outright saying it in the confessionals. Like I’d like the Leader to see that stuff and be all, “Well, damn, I guess that plan didn’t work!” Or Red or She Hulk being all, “What the crap, you guys knew Skaar is a traitor and you didn’t tell us?!”
