Pointless Nonsense

pacific-rimI managed to avoid all the Pacific Rim trailers and commercials and teasers and things, so I really didn’t know a thing about it other than Guillermo del Toro and giant robots fighting monsters. I was a little surprised that it was a lot closer to Independence Day than Prometheus. It was a popcorn movie. The backstory, the mythology, and anything else all take a backseat to giving us a small set of characters to care about and then just having mechs and giant monsters fight. It reminded me a lot of a Michael Bay movie, if you had a quality script doctor to cut out all the garbage, and had a director with a better visual flair. I dunno if that description sounds good to other people, but I really liked it a lot.

That sounds about right. It may seem like a bad thing to some, but I really don’t think every film must provide a lot of ‘substance’. Otherwise, we would have to declare Star Wars a one big failure.
