Pointless Nonsense

Mostly older comics, roughly best-to-worst:

The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck does not, as I originally thought, predate the DuckTales cartoon, it was actually made after. It’s apparently based on both the cartoon and the comics that inspired the show. But anyway, I’m mostly enjoying it for nostalgia factor. It basically tells the story of the early years of Scrooge. In the cartoon, they frequently flashed back to his days in the Yukon prospecting for gold, and this tells the story from his number one dime up to and including the Klondike days. It Gyro Gearloose’s grandfather, Magica De Spell, the Beagle Boys, Flintheart Glomgold (who in the comics is Afrikaner and not another Scot like he is in the cartoon). scrooge
The Punisher Meets Archie is a notoriously weird crossover in which the Punisher chases a criminal who bears an uncanny resemblance to Archie Andrews into the town of Riverdale. It was actually well done, switching perspectives and art styles to tell the story in both Archie and Punisher styles. One thing I found hilarious was that the Archie lookalike came into town claiming to be a CEO of a pharmaceutical company. And while talking business with Veronica’s father, she instantly develops a crush on him, and asks him to a high school dance. And Veronica’s father is just like “well sure, ok, Mr. grown adult, take my teenage daughter to the sock hop. I see no problems with that!” pun-archie
The Punisher is the 8th (!) comic series called “The Punisher” from 2009 (and there’s been another since, plus three different Punisher: War Zone series, two Punisher: War Journals, a Punisher MAX, and PunisherMAX, which is nuts). And it starts off really strong. It’s set during the Dark Reign deal where Norman Osborn ran S.H.I.E.L.D., and Frank hooks up with a computer whiz nerd hacker guy, who, among other things, leads him to a cache of superweapons. So we get to see Punisher kill guys with Hawkeye arrows and Ant-Man shrinking and stuff. It was fairly dumb, but fun/silly. But then there’s a whole thing where he gets chopped up by “Dark Wolverine” aka Daken, and then reassembled as FrankenCastle, and it becomes about the whole underground monster pat of the Marvel Universe. Man-Thing and Morbius and stuff. And I started to lose interest fast. punisher-1
Invincible Universe is half companion to Invincible and half follow-up to Guarding the Globe. It clearly intends to mix in the other Kirkman creations more: Tech Jacket, Capes Inc, and maybe some of the semi-abandoned side characters from Invincible. It’s not the greatest thing ever but perfectly readable. inv-univ
