Pointless Nonsense

djangoDjango Unchained is an excellent revenge story. I’ve always loved Quentin Tarantino’s dialogue and penchant for violence, but hated his tendency to be too clever, make his presence as a filmmaker too obvious, and to favor making references over telling stories. But between Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, he’s made two straight movies without any of that. And I’d be quite happy if he made bloody revenge movies for the rest of his career.

Apparently, lots of people seem to be talking about Leonardo DiCaprio for an Oscar, but I don’t really see why. He grows a beard and has a southern accent and hams it up. I was more impressed by Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Kerry Washington (who I spent the whole time trying to figure out where I knew her from, and it’s that she was The Thing’s blind lady friend in the Fantastic Four movie).

There were a couple of puzzling things in the movie, a completely baffling cameo and some characters of an unexpected nationality, but both are pretty well explained in the imdb trivia section as being related to actors QT liked and wanted to cast.

Everyone I have talked to about the movie also thought Christoph Waltz was fantastic, and he was absolutely my favorite aspect of the movie. I think Samuel L. Jackson was good but not nomination style good. It felt like more of an in joke in that Samuel ‘Motherfucking’ Jackson was using some of his classic lines, but suddenly in a weak/subservient role.
