Pointless Nonsense

The Burn with Jeff Ross is the insult comic’s new show on Comedy Central, and not one I’ll be watching. There were some funny moments, but the format of the show doesn’t do much for me. It opened with a standard talk show monologue type thing, except he was standing next to a monitor. It wasn’t bad, but not that good either. Then they had a filmed segment where he hurled insults at meter maids while they worked. It was basically cruel (“why don’t you write something useful for a change, like a suicide note?”). It’s one thing to do that to a roast person who signs up for it, or even an audience member at a comedy gig, but to pick on random strangers just seems awful. And it could be that the part they didn’t show was him explaining his schtick and asking if they’re ok with it, but as a TV viewer, without that knowledge of implied consent, it just seems terrible. The only part of the show that really worked well was the last segment, where he and a few other comedians bantered on various topics. J.B. Smoove is pretty much always hilarious, and I rather liked Amy Schumer. I got much more enjoyment out of finding her stuff on YouTube than from The Burn.

I thought the guest comedian section was the weakest, and the Public Enemy section was great. I’m sure they worked with the meter people, and made sure they were fine with getting roasted. Sure, it was a cruel line, but c’mon! That was a great line.
