Pointless Nonsense

The Grey is another entry in the Liam Neeson is a badass older guy subgenre, and it’s a pretty damn good one. I mean, about twenty minutes into the movie, Liam Neeson punches a wolf in the face. So that’s pretty awesome. There’s not much as far as plot goes, it’s all in the trailers. There’s a plane crash in Alaska, Liam Neeson and a few others survive, but they’re in the middle of nowhere, and there are wolves. So the plot is basically “they’re fucked.” But the harsh environment and the fact that they have crashed close enough to a wolves’ den for them to get territorial is a really good environment for a suspenseful survival tale. The constant threat of wolf attacks out of nowhere and watching their friends die has everyone (including the viewer) on edge, and Liam Neeson is just perfect for this kinda scenario.

The wolves are completely monstrous, I thought it might be bullshit how big and terrifying they were. I guess I’ve always thought of them as roughly siberian husky-sized, since they’re kinda wolf-looking dogs, but apparently wolves run can get close to great dane size. So the movie may have tended towards larger wolves, but not impossible ones. They were almost supernatural though, because anyone could be going along in total silence, and then totally out of nowhere a wolf pounces on him and latches onto his throat. But that’s just movie making, I guess. Hearing a wolf from a few feet away wouldn’t make them any less deadly in person, but cheating and making them that much more startling makes the movie more exciting.
