Pointless Nonsense

The Hour is a BBC show about the people involved in the production of a 60 Minutes-type news show for the BBC in 1956. At first, I thought it to be yet another attempt to rip off Mad Men (following The Playboy Club and Magic City and probably others I’m not remembering), but partway through the first episode they introduced a conspiracy angle that kinda hooked me. The one thing really going against it is my lack of knowledge of British history, specifically the Suez crisis that is dominating the news in the 2nd and 3rd episodes.

Dominic “McNulty” West plays the host, and although his Baltimore accent wasn’t perfect on The Wire, I still find it weird when he’s all English and stuff. The weirdly-named but quite cute Romola Garai plays the producer. And this guy who I’ve never seen in anything else is the main reporter guy. Moriarty from Sherlock and Mac from Green Wing and this cute blonde girl also appear.

They do have some interesting indicators of the times. They randomly pass a bed and breakfast at one point with a sign that says “No Coloureds, No Irish, No Children.”
