Pointless Nonsense

Luck is the newest HBO series from David (Deadwood) Milch. After a series about the old west, and another about surfing and metaphysics, the obvious next step is horse racing. The pilot is directed by Michael Mann, it stars Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina, Jill Hennessy, and a string of other familiar faces, so obviously hopes are high.

The pilot introduces a very large cast of characters and enough plot lines that things are somewhat confusing. Matters aren’t helped by a few characters with hard-to-understand accents. But I rather liked Dustin Hoffman’s character’s thread, Nick Nolte’s thread, and this cute Irish girl. Plus, the setting of a race track is full of possibilities. Grass, mud, horses, and colorful jockey uniforms make for a nice-looking place to shoot, and the combination of degenerate gamblers, working class people in the stables, and rich people… that seems like fertile territory.
