Pointless Nonsense

The Heart, She Holler is an Adult Swim miniseries starring Patton Oswalt and Kristen Schaal, so it was pretty much a given that I’d be watching it. Unfortunately, it’s a little too Adult Swim weird for me. Though the incest jokes and the weird interaction with VHS recordings were fairly funny, that left about 9 minutes of an 11 minute episode that did absolutely nothing for me.

I was happy that the title made some sense after seeing the episode. It’s an odd choice, but it’s about an influential hillbilly family living in the town of Heartsche Holler, so the title’s sort of a pun. Also, I totally didn’t realize until now that “holler” was Appalachian for “hollow.” A highfalutin southern accent (Scarlett O’Hara) doesn’t pronounce the r in holler, so “hollow” and “holler” sound identical. Appalachian accents do pronounce the r, but their proximity to the upper class southern accents in generations past has resulted in r’s appearing in words that shouldn’t have them. You’ll actually hear people from Appalachia put an r in the word “wash,” pronouncing it like “warsh.” In New England, this only happened with one word that I knew of, with lots of people putting an r at the end of “idea.” And you can tell how little I enjoyed this show by the fact that I’ve now written more about linguistics and the rhotic vs. non-rhotic r than about the show itself.
