Pointless Nonsense

The Fighter is more than just a movie with Amy Ryan in skimpy outfits and amusing Boston accents. Though it would have been better if it was The Trainer instead. Mark Wahlberg’s Micky Ward is an incredibly generic sports movie protagonist, but Christian Bale as his crackhead brother/trainer steals the movie completely. It’s not the least bit surprising that he won an oscar for it.

What’s strange is that I didn’t know until they flashed it on the screen before the movie that it was based on a true story. When I was still in high school, I was a dedicated fan of a strange regional cable sports call-in show which, when it wasn’t doing its traditional free form sports-comedy schtick, often killed time by talking about athletes from the area, so I knew a lot about New England natives in sports (I know nothing about Georgia athletes these days, since virtually all my non-national sports news comes from Boston sources still). They were getting excited about Micky Ward before I moved away. Not giving a shit about boxing, I never knew what happened to him, so it was interesting to see what ended up happening with his career.
