Pointless Nonsense

The Killing premiered on AMC Sunday night, and it was decidedly not bad. It’s apparently a remake of a Dutch series with the equally clever title Two cops find evidence that the girl in the poster is missing or dead (spoiler alert: see the poster and/or the title), and then we get into what looks like it’ll be the teenage murder version of Damages. There’s some high school stuff, political intrigue, and plenty of opportunity for plot twists and surprises. But the first two hours were mostly exposition. The main character (Mireille Enos) is actually quite boring so far, but I’m intrigued by her partner (Joel Kinnaman) who is kind of unsettling (one of his investigative techniques, which turned out to be successful, was to give two high school girls pot and get them to agree to what sounded like a threesome) and by the mayoral candidate played by Bill Campbell (that scoundrel guy from one TNG episode, and Jordan Collier from The 4400).

BSG alums Michelle Forbes and Callum Keith Rennie show up, so that’s cool. I thought I’d heard this was shot in upstate New York, but imdb says it’s Vancouver, which explains a lot of things: the presence of Leoben, convincingly seeming like Seattle, and the teen actors who say “out” weirdly.

Anyway, there’s nothing specifically wrong with the first two hours, but there’s not a ton that’s right with it. There’s room for improvement, and I have nothing better to do than try a couple more episodes, but I would not recommend it at this point.

That Rosie Larsen looks pretty cute! Oh, and Geebs-famous, because as soon as I looked up who she was, I was all, “Oh, its that chick who I thought was totally hot in that one ep of Fringe and then again in an ep of Psych!”
