Pointless Nonsense

Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead is a great title and has a great poster, so I was pretty intrigued. My opinion quickly soured when Philip Seymour Hoffman’s naked ass was prominently featured in the opening shot, but they made up for that with a few scenes of Marissa Tomei nudity. Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman star as brothers with money troubles who concoct a scheme to rob a jewelry store, which goes horribly, horribly wrong. The story starts with the robbery but fills in the background through a series of flashbacks from various characters’ perspectives. Also making appearances are Albert Finney, Aunt May from Spider-Man, Amy Ryan, that one guy’s wife from Boardwalk Empire who flirted with lesbianism, the prohibition enforcement agent also from Boardwalk Empire, and the guy from FlashForward who’s in search of his lost daughter.

It’s slightly odd, since most crime movies deal with hardened criminals who, even if they feel it, show no remorse for their actions. Here, when things go wrong, there’s remorse, regret, panic. Like all good crime stories, we’re shown exactly what would drive these people to do these terrible things, so we see a lot more about these characters than you normally get from a crime film.
